Coaching Assessment Tools

The coach can use the five conditions influencing team performances and the ten performance factors listed in figure 1.1 as assessment tools. Remember that a team problem may be structural. That is, it may be related to the five conditions influencing team performance. It may also stem from the performance of one or more players. One or more performance barriers can be affecting an individual or the team as a whole. The problem may present itself as either a performance issue or as a structural issue, but it may actually be stemming from the other. The coach, of course, is looking for the root cause.

Starting a team well means that the five conditions influencing team performance are in place. Coaching managers can influence this throughout the organization because they often appoint or authorize a team assignment. They can ponder the appropriateness of having a team versus a manager, individual, or work unit do the assignment. Without the five conditions in place, teams will struggle unnecessarily or fail altogether.

When diagnosing team turbulence, the coach mentally visits the five conditions influencing team performance and asks questions like these:

Is the assignment well defined? Does the team understand the assignment? Is the team's purpose spelled out?

Does it make sense?

Is it realistic, even if it is challenging?

Is the team clear about its purpose?
